Raising the Barn

I am always pleased when someone puts the time, effort and money into preserving an older building rather than just knocking it down and erecting something new. Especially when it is an older barn that blends in with the original farmhouse. New England is filled with barns that, due to neglect or abandonment, are in danger of collapsing and the more that can be preserved, the better.

I also just love watching the process of lifting the fragile buildings off the ground without falling apart. This type of work requires a skilled crew with strength and experience and the company that does most, if not all, of this work is located in FryeburgFox and Sons, 207-697-2233. I’m not sure, but it appears that the owner will be replacing some of the boards and pouring a concrete foundation for the barn. It is fun being a sidewalk superintendent on these jobs.

Here’s a web site for a Vermont company that has great info on barns: The Barn People
I have included two photos of an entire farmhouse that was lifted a few years ago as the the owners installed a poured concrete foundation and basement. That house is across the Center Lovell Post Office on Route 5a.

My wife and I own the barn featured in your article. You are correct. We will be pouring a concrete foundation and it will be necessary to replace some of the boards. We plan to use reclaimed lumber, taken from the floor and interior walls, to rebuild as much of it as possible. Fox and Sons have done an excellent job in jacking the barn and Drew Corporation, of Lovell, Me, is doing a fantastic job with the excavation. Dunlea Concrete of Lovell will be handling all of the concrete work. We are very fortunate to have such talented folks in our commnuity.

Mike, Thanks for the info. I think it is great that you are doing the work on the barn. Now you won’t have to worry about it for another 100 years or so! If you don’t mind, I would like to do a follow-up when everything is finished.
